Why bother to apply to a school if you don't want to go?

If they can be used as leverage to negotiate merit scholarship, then absolutely.

If you have the credentials for T14, then don't apply to anything less than T20 except maybe add BU,BC,GW,ND. I went to LST and applied to a hand full of schools ranked in the 30-50 range that had decent employment. It was just a waste of my 28 bucks

There's no such thing as safety law schools. Just reaches, targets, and pawns in your negotiations games. If none of your offers are good enough, you don't go. Unlike college, attending a "safety" could very easily be disastrous.

Also you need to acquire some geographic focus, applying to and seriously considering random regional schools that you don't have strong ties to (or at least a strong reason to attend) is also potentially a recipe for disaster.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense to me. Like I alluded to in my original post I'm fully intending on blanketing almost all of the T14, but as I'm considering my list of schools I didn't know if/how many it's worthwhile to tack on outside the T14 - ideally as pawns.
I applied to like 20 schools, so I get it

But ideally they are pawns which are effective for negotiating with a target. Non-T14s almost always aren't effective for negotiating with T14s. But if you have like a T20 target then yeah, applying to its ranking peers potentially makes a lot of sense.

Just curious, why are these schools any better than the schools mentioned in my post? Do they have exceptionally better employment numbers than similarly ranked schools?

Also, dumber question, why did you have to spend 28 bucks if you had fee waivers?
The reason the 4 schools mentioned are sometimes worth applying to is because they have decent employment/reputation. I showed UCLA my offer from one of those schools and they upped my offer by 20k. But if you have a 167+ 3.8+ then you can just do t14, and maybe UT/UCLA/Vandy tier

WUSTL gives a ton of cash.

I applied to Minn, used my full ride there to get a stipend at WUSTL, then used that to get a decent scholarship at my sole T-14 admission. So I'd say it was worth it for $28.
