Unofficial offer via email?

Has anyone ever received an unofficial offer of admission, i.e. an email telling you you have a spot, but asking you to confirm that you will be attending before sending a formal offer?
This has just happened to me, and it seems weird...

This is pretty common because schools want to protect their yields

I had a similar thing happen to one school regarding a scholarship offer. I think it is fairly common later in the cycle since they want to protect Yield rate, but also want to cross off a rejection as soon as possible to try and secure the next on the list.

The only "unofficial" offer I had was an email telling me I'd been accepted and that they wanted to let me know as soon as possible since it was so late in the cycle. An official admission packet came in the mail about a week later. I don't know about the whole "let us know if you'll actually come before we do anything official" email, that seems sketchy to me. I guess if it's from a reputable school it's probably nothing to worry about.

This absolutely happens late in the cycle. Consider it an admit if you're willing and able to go without much $$.

I have no idea. I just know uva is notorious for playing games like this with their yield.

Normally I would agree, but this is the school offering near full-tuition to some people if they defer a year.
