Academic LORs are really the only ones law schools care about. But since you're 10 years out of undergrad, that's probably not going to happen. To the extent that Marilyn Manson can write you a professional LOR that would be good if someone else wrote it--that is, it can speak to your writing and analytical abilities--it's probably better than if it were written by any rando you worked with. But only if the LOR is as strong as anyone else could write. Who recommenders are matters very little, especially if they're outside the legal field.

LORs aren't really going to win you any battles, they're more of a box to check.

Just ask to get a copy of it before you use it to make sure it's not going to hurt you in some way.

Adcomms might look negatively at celebrity LORs unless the recommender makes it clear there was a close professional/academic relationship, too. Make sure it's a LOR you'd want to use if the recommender was some anonymous schmo.

Good luck. I have a feeling you're going to find your next career far more interesting and exciting.

I didn't say a "great" one by any means. C'mon, we're all trying to find any minor edge here and this is only, like, the 20th stupidest idea I've seen floated on this forum this morning alone.

Granted, I don't follow his career but if he actually knows you then sure why not.
It's not like you're getting a LOR from Charles Manson.

Could be wrong but I think those numbers are more likely than not to get you into Columbia, MM or not. Yale probably still a longshot.

So will it be signed Brian Hugh Warner...

If you've been working in that field, and he's a coworker or boss... like his music or not I don't think you can argue with his success in the genre, even if he may have peaked a while ago.

Is it really necessary for you to sign your name at the end of every post?

Working with Marilyn Manson isn't a unique Yale soft. Being Marilyn Manson is a unique Yale soft.

People are ignoring you've been out ten years so academic letters are less expected than if you were two years out.

If you have a close enough relationship that you're comfortable talking with him about what he should write I would go for it, but I'm into weird stuff that makes you stand out. But you want to make sure he talks about the skills that would make you likely to succeed in law or whatever, attention to detail, analytical reasoning, whatever.

And make sure he signs it "I am the God of Fuck."

Go for it. It might not make all the difference, but I don't think it will hurt and it'll make you stand out.
