Every school has its own requirements for a number of letters. I think however most require two and accept two to four. I am aware of at least one school (Cooley) that does not use them, one school that makes them optional (Berkeley) and one school that recommends three (Michigan).

Your writers can write general letters and this is what most people get. They can also write letters for specific schools. You then pick which letters to send where.

Arizona State does not require them either, but I think accepts up to 4.

I would get your best two, although if you have more than two professors you think will write great letters you could consider asking for three or four. If you are unsure on some you could even choose different letters for different schools so that if one is worse than expected it does not drag down all your applications. Do not go for just straight numbers in letters though, almost every school will value two great letters more than two great and one decent letter.


The only school that I can think of that puts value on school specific letters is Stanford.

I got three because many schools allow up to three and a third one, if good, may give you a small edge over another candidate if all other stats are equal.
