Median Application Method...Or sliding scale?

All,

I know the popular wisdom is that all that matters for admission is if one is at/above the median, but is there a sliding scale for being "just below" a median? I mean this more for GPA than LSAT. For example, I know there is a huge increase in chances when one moves from 172 to 173 at Harvard, but is there really such a big increase when one moves from say, 3.84 to 3.85 at UVA?

I guess my question is: is it really that damning to be .01 below median for GPA, especially if one is already above median for LSAT?

No. It is normal for GPA medians to fluctuate a bit year to year, while schools fight like hell to keep their LSAT medians. A 3.84 will not hold you back.
