I'm not sure exactly which are most known for it, but I'm planning on writing Why X for Penn, Virginia, Michigan, and Duke. I'm doing the additional response for Georgetown, too. Better safe than sorry, I suppose!

what exactly is the point of writing such a letter and what would the letter consist of?

An applicant would write them if their numbers are higher than the school's because the school sometimes assumes that the applicant will be accepted to a higher ranked school and choose to attend there. Writing a Why X is a way of expressing that you actually are interested in the school and that you have taken the time to do some research on it. It's helpful if you've already visited but you can also find info on the school's website about things that appeal to you. Basically, you usually select things that you like about the school, for e.x. the location, clinics, and specific professors, and then you write about those things. Some schools specifically mention the Why X essay and list a maximum length. You can include it is an addendum on the LSAC application for each school.

So does this then imply that there is really no need to write Why X essays if you do not have numbers that are higher than the school's?

Not necessarily. I would still have written them if my numbers weren't high. I think it's a good way to let a school know you really are interested. Better safe than sorry.

Yes, in fact, some of them are some of the strongest YP schools in the game. Remember that the schools in the lower t-14 are competing against the t-6, and CCN is competing against HYS, although I don't think anyone in the t-6 really YP's.

I'm sure the Penn kids are gonna object to this but Penn does some pretty strong YP.

Duke/Michigan are also pretty bad.

Georgetown YPs schollys which is weird but it happens.

What does it mean to YP a scholly?

I'm guessing it means that they still admit you but don't give you a good scholly even though they would give someone with lower numbers one.
