Coldfeet: FIU Law in a month VS. Retake, shoot for NY market

I'm set to start at FIU in about a month but I'm seriously considering sitting out a year to up my lsat score and move to NYC. I have ties to the NYC market (lived there when I was younger for a few years, immediate family in the area that work in the legal profession as attorneys) and would love to take advantage of the resources up there. I took a pt yesterday and scored in the upper 150s and feel like I can get in the mid 160s by the October LSAT. I'm looking at Cardozo, Brooklyn Law School and New York Law School in that preference order. I actually spoke to NYLS about their two year program last week and I qualify for their $50k grant with my current numbers but I'd like to get more out of them. On the other hand, FIU is going to be really cheap as it is the local school and I can commute from home and I get instate tuition and I kind of just want to stop delaying law school. What does TLS think of my situation? Do the schools that I'm looking at in NYC have solid reputations up there? Is FIU worth attending?

If you're at high 150s, you CAN probably get into the low 160s by Sep/Dec/Feb (doesn't matter when). Join the study group on here and get MOAR MONAY. See you in the study group.

Dan, you know the answers to these questions so I'm assuming you're just trolling. If you move to an NYC school, you will have to change your username to "Young Namath."

Lol no man. I'll still rep my Dolphins up there. But what do you think of Cardozo, BLS, NYLS?

Retake and shoot for a better school outside the NY market. In NYC, you are competing against Columbia, NYU, Cornell, and most of the other top schools that are not located in a major market. Go to the best regional school, for as little cost as possible, in a market that you would want to live in. Going to Cardozo or Brooklyn without a full ride or significant scholarship would be a nightmare with the cost of living and tuition in NYC.

You know NYLS was used by its own grads and that the New York Court of Appeals called their actions unethical.

I am begging you not to go to this school.

NYLS tried selling me on the location of the school as it is steps away from Wall street, U.S. District Courts and local Courts. I was intrigued by that and their two year program. If they're offering some $$$ now, I think I can get more when I increase my LSAT score. Why do you not endorse it? I'm not saying I definitely want to go there. I just need more insight.

NYSprague explained it to you already.

If that wasn't good enough check out this http://www.lstscorereports.com/compare/ ... /brooklyn/ the debt at graduation is unbelievably high for schools in generally and even worse when you see the "best" employment % is 56%

Dude come on. You've been around here long enough to know the shtick; Retake the LSAT until you can go to T-14 or a flagship regional on the cheap.

You are selling yourself short. You're better than all of those TTT schools that you mentioned. Just chillax for a year while working and studying for the LSAT. Tell FIU to F right off. The ~$500 seat deposit is a pittance in the long run. Just retake for at least a 160.

The location of the school doesn't matter unless you are going as a tourist. The location has absolutely nothing to do with reputation or employment. You can walk by those buildings and wave, I guess, if that makes you happy as a student.

This is the same stuff as American promoting its location in DC, except NYLS reputation is much, much, much worse.

Assuming you're not trolling:

If you're open to sitting out and retaking (good for you) why the random move to NYC? If you retake, you could be looking at UF/FSU with money, which is a much better option given your ties and goals.

It's not necessarily random. I have ties to a few mid/small sized firms in NYC (family in senior management, cousin has her own 5 attorney practice and is looking to expand) and I feel like I can really make some moves up there. I never really thought of the idea because I was so caught up in building a network down here and just going to law school but I loved NYC when I lived there, still visit every few months for a few days and wouldn't mind practicing there for a while. The DAs offices up there are also very competitive but probably the best office you can work at from what I've heard and as you know, thats the bulk of my legal experience for now. But to be honest, I'm eyeing NYLS and their scholarship offer for the two year program for now but I'd love to get into Cardozo with $$$$. Appreciate your input Spanish Man.
