168/3.84 LSAC GPA - Where should I be applying?

Post by prospectivelaw2018 » Sat Jul 12, 2014 12:54 am

I have a 168 on my LSAT and a 3.84 LSAC GPA and an compiling my list of schools to consider. I am currently based in DC, so I'm really looking closely at schools in the area.

I am looking at applying to:
NYU
Columbia
Georgetown
George Washington University
Duke
Northwestern
University of Virginia
University of Maryland
American University

Purely for scholarship consideration, I am also considering applying to:
Vanderbilt
Notre Dame
Washington & Lee
Wake Forest
Emory
UCLA
Boston University

Are there any schools on here that I'm missing as far as scholarship consideration and likelihood of getting in?

Retake for 2-3 more points. Don't waste that GPA.

Where you are now:

Where you are with a 171:
http://mylsn.info/b51vrw/

Where you are with a 173:
http://mylsn.info/xv9dap/

(You could go from a longshot at NYU/Columbia to a lock with some scholarship money with just a few more questions right on a multiple choice test)

Study for this September and ace a retake. Also, many of the schools on your list give you a coin flip chance of landing a job after graduation (I'm looking at you UMD--http://www.lstscorereports.com/?school=maryland ). Look at the LST reports for all the schools on your list.. Note the difference between schools placing a lot of graduates in biglaw/clerkships. If this is what you want to do, go to a T14. If you go to Boston University, you'll work in Boston. If you go to UMD, you'll work in MD. Regional schools = you're almost always locked in a certain region.

What are your plans for after law school?

I'm looking at big law after graduation.

Does it make a difference that I did my undergraduate program at Duke and graduated a full year early?

Disclaimer: 0L posting general TLS consensus

Most people will say the graduating early thing will not only NOT be an advantage for law school admissions but it might actually be a slight DISADVANTAGE for hiring. I have heard a lot of firms like a bit of work experience (not necessary, but its a nice thing to have)

As for the Duke thing, I think most people would say it would only matter at the tip top schools like YSH that you probably won't be able to get into with numbers alone. And even then, I heard its VERY marginal.

Why is Cornell not on either list?

That should be OK for me. I graduated early back in 2012 and have been working since so the work experience preference shouldn't disadvantage me.

As far as why Cornell isn't on that list, I just haven't really considered it. I visited it during my undergraduate years, and, well, wasn't really a fan. Worth adding it back on purely for scholarship consideration?

Yes. Your numbers are in the perfect range for them.

Also, strike Maryland if you want Biglaw, and strike American if you want to be a lawyer

To add color to this, I got almost full tuition from Cornell with exactly your numbers. If big law on the east coast is your goal, its hard to do better.

Since you want biglaw, retake and blanket the T14. Drop American, UMD, BU, etc.

Thanks for the insight. Looks like I will be adding Cornell to my list.

What about UChicago? http://www.law.uchicago.edu/files/file/ ... 013-14.pdf

Don't know too much about UChicago and their scholarship generosity.

You're under both medians at UChicago. If you get in it will probably be at sticker but it might still be worth an application. Also, retake.

No Penn? Agreed that you should blanket T6 on down and remove the other crap. Save the app fees.
