Top Law Schools

According to the the ABA 509, only 5 students at WUSTL (for example) for all three years were at the school with full rides. Should I be reading this as many of those given full rides matriculated elsewhere, the scholarship is relatively rare or both?

82% of WUSTL students (as of last year) are not working in a 500+ firm, so I assume you're not gunning for big law

Obviously take a better offer when you invariably get it, but WUSTL on a full ride is definitely not a bad way to go.

Don't get so hung up on biglaw that you consider anything else a failure. There's a lot to be said for making no student loan payments.

Yes, but still not sure how much that will be factored in at the end of the day. I guess it makes sense that students are offered scholarships in virture of the fact that they likely have another offer from a higher ranked school.

- STL isn't very cool.

- Not easy to get a prefstigous job.

- It's a regional degree in a region with a poor, saturated legal market.

Big Law where? Any secondary goals? What ties do you have? Pre-existing loans. This decision can't be made in a vacuum.

TCR is you should consider re-taking your 169 with such a high GPA for $$$ at T-14.

The nice thing about a full ride is that you don't need Big Law to eat.

That said, if you're dead set on Big Law or federal clerkship, WUSTL doesn't seem like a great bet.

You should be getting $$ at lower t-14 based on those numbers. I'm guessing your decision will come down to WUSTL full ride or lower T14 with maybe half, so you'll just have to prioritize how much you want big law v. how much you want to be debt free.

I wrote about this a few years back; I can't find the story right away and I don't have access to any legit databases right now, but there were at least a couple of large-scale studies (at the undergraduate level) that showed those who had their tuition paid for performed marginally worse compared to students in similar situations who had to foot their own bill.

Obviously earning a full ride to professional school is a different situation; in those studies it was overwhelmingly the students' parents who paid their tuition, IIRC.

So there you go: fuzzy, qualified hearsay. (I was running low on ideas to convince him not to go, because it's not a bad option for any reasonable person).

Compare it to the number of full-ride scholarship recipients matriculating elsewhere. Maybe I'm misremembering, but I think when I looked through even some of the lower T14s, many of those offered full-rides withdraw. Read into that what you will ("maybe better prospects for more debt tends to be a trade-off people generally make?" to maintain your hypothesis), but I doubt it's just the case of WUSTL.
