I can't see it having a huge effect, depending on the reason for you being let go. If your boss just feels you're not a good fit for the job, that's one thing. If you're doing something illegal/unethical, that could come back and bite you assuming anyone ever calls China for a reference.

I'm also a teacher in China (though through Peace Corps not contracted). Sent a PM.

Thank you for the response. In short, we're having issues agreeing on the contract I signed ( which according to the research I've done .... I'm basically S.O.L. ). In any case, would this all have to be reported?

Why would you have to report quitting your job? The only thing that would change would be the new end-date on your resume and if you're already accepted I doubt that would have any effect on your decision.

I agree with what others have said though, if you get fired because of some sort of illegal dealings, that would be the only time I would think you'd need to report.

Some C&F disclosures require reporting job termination, some don't. When in doubt, call the admissions office and ask. In the meantime, try not to get fired.

I'm not trying to be insensitive here, but isn't it absurdly easy to get a teaching job in China? --LinkRemoved-- Couldn't you just quit and get another one? Then you don't have to worried about being fired, won't have a resume gap, and don't have to worry about coming home early.

Hi, no offense taken. It is relatively easy to get another teaching job in China but that would require signing another year contract which would not be possible given that I would need to return to school in the fall. Second, that would require my current employer to release my current work visa with a letter of release which also poses as a problem ( not just for myself, but for many foreigners who plan to quit their jobs here.)

And Optimist Prime, I am more so interested in the outcome if I were to be fired. I guess the quitting part was a no-brainer. Thanks for your input.

Aha, well, thanks for clearing that up, and sorry to hear that! I agree with Optimist Prime, I don't think that either quitting or getting fired would effect your applications unless it were for something egregious, and that doesn't sound like it would apply to your situation. Obviously, the work visa issue makes things a bit more difficult, but if you're in the financial situation to be able to quit, I would recommend doing that and traveling for a while or something. Not for the sake of law schools, but for the sake of future employment. A lot of employment questionnaires ask if you've ever been fired, and its much easier to not to have to worry about explaining the situation.

I'm probably overreacting, but I am afraid that quitting and ending my contract early will also have negative consequences. Working contracts in China are virtually useless as the Chinese court will often side with Chinese employers over foreigners. I am also looking at potential fines or visa issues that I would rather not have happen. Nothing that I did was egregious, but the company that I work for has often taken vengeance on employees who've crossed over to their bad side.
