I wrote one for Chicago. Didn't write one for Stanford.

I'm wrapping up my apps to Columbia and Penn. Is it worth sending to either of these?

The school rank has nothing to do with it. There are just schools that prefer them -- Penn, Michigan, UVA, Duke, and maybe one integrated into your main PS for Berkeley.

I think they are unnecessary for HYS + Columbia. I think you should write one for Penn (if you have a compelling reason to)

Why Penn is basically a requirement, especially if you're above median. Columbia doesn't need one.

Penn's is phrased a little weird. It gives Penn's strengths and then asks how you match up? Just to be clear, this is a pure Why X, and not a regurgitation of the prompt in relation to the applicant?
