Leaving the Country during cycle

Post by bigsleep1 » Thu Jan 16, 2014 1:42 am

Hey,

I am getting the last of my apps in this Sunday, but a family situation has come up in India and I will be out of the country, possibly as early as Feb 15.

Will I be able to communicate effectively while overseas, or is it needed to stay home?

I will have internet/phone access readily available in India.

Does anyone have any experience or insight?

Thank you.

Why would it matter? As long as you have email access you can answer any questions adcomms might have. As long as you have phone/email, you'll get most of your acceptances. The only thing you'll be missing out on is mailings involving acceptances/denials/WLs, but you could always have your address changed to your India address for the time being.

I went to Europe for three weeks during my cycle. I communicated via skype phone app + wifi, and e-mailed as usual. The only bitch is the time change. Making a phone call during regular U.S. business hours is a challenge. I talked to an Adcomm for about an hour and a half one night at 11:30pm my time. It was after dinner and drinks, and I was on vacation, so... not sober. It went fine.

Thank you guys for your input.

My main worry is getting mailed stuff here, and missing out on it.

Also, changing my address to India is where it gets kind of uneven, I trust the internet where I am going, but certainly not the postal service. Lol.

Would it have any effect on scholarship negotiations?

Do you have anyone here who could receive/check&scan your mail?

That'd solve the problem

Yeah, just ask a friend to check your mail for you and email anything important.

You might even try sending an email to the schools where you applied to let them know what's happening and ask that they send a copy of any mail communications to your email address.
