Wow. And people still keep saying that things will flatten out next year. I can't really see that happening.

I hope it brings me some green, green, scholly money.

So if the number of people applying to law school keep dropping, wouldn't you expect to hear about some mass layoffs of law profs in the news? Well whatever happens, the law schools had this coming. It was long overdue to correct the imbalance in the legal market.

This was touched on over at Inside the Law School Scam:

"(5) Although schools are going to extraordinary measures to disguise the fact, faculty layoffs have taken place at several places, in the form of offer you can't refuse "buyouts." Staff firings are commonplace. It remains difficult to say when and if an ABA school will actually close, but expect to see some schools merge (constructive closures), and a couple of others spin off separate campuses into independent entities which will be allowed to disappear by their central administrations.

Beyond these specific developments, it's fair to say that the general atmosphere in legal academia is radically different than it was three years ago. Back then, the crisis was invisible, because it was only affecting our graduates, which meant there were an almost unlimited number of rationalizations available for denying its existence. (It's a few malcontents, it's the recession, law degrees are versatile, network! etc. etc.). As always, we are all strong enough to bear other men's misfortunes, but to cut one's own finger is a different matter."

So the total projected number for the 2013-2014 cycle by their count would be 51,392 applicants. Last year there were 59,400 applicants. If the data holds this would represent another drop of about 13.4% year-over-year. This would be an even bigger drop, percentage-wise, than last year (-12.3%).

What will be really interesting is when we get updated LSAT bandwidth data (Spivey?) so we can see where the drop is hitting most in terms of LSAT scores.

What has Spivey uncovered so far about LSAT numbers? I believe there was a rise in the 175-180 scorers, and a drop in the group below?

There was a rise, but the overall numbers of those scores are still very, very small compared to the rest of the scores.

Don't know who would be saying this. As long as the number of people taking the LSAT continues to drop expect the number of people applying to law school to continue dropping.

And, given this link (http://www.cambridgelsat.com/resources/ ... les-table/) we can determine the approximate amount of test takers who will score at each band, assuming these percentages hold.

175-180: 99.5; .005 *1.121 * 112515 = 630
170-174: 97.4; .026 * .954 * 112515 =2790 -630 =2160
165-169: 91.5; .085 * .85 * 112515= 8129 -2160=7913
