How do law schools prevent lying on applications?

Surely if the law school admissions people see something obviously iffy they'll doublecheck (like a google search or something), but how can they possibly know if you lie about a lot of small things? Perhaps that you worked a job 25 hours a week instead of 20? Or that you were part of a club you really weren't?

Why would you lie about working 25 vs 20 hours? It's pretty much the same thing.
No one cares about what crappy club you may or may not have been a member of, and unless there are red flags, no one is gonna check. May as well lie about what color underwear you're wearing. Just remember that, if for any reason anyone investigates your past, or someone who knows feuded to fuck you over, even the smallest little white lie can fuck over your future career

Oh, I know that, and my applications have long been sent out. I'm just curious...during undergrad admissions I knew a lot of people who lied about this stuff.

I've always wondered about the LGBT question. There's really no way to confirm something that personal, then again it's kind of a messed up thing to lie about

Guy at my school joined outlaw and played coy at networking events to play up that card

Of course, I've never seen anyone get any kind of significant boost for their sexuality, either.

Yeah, I guess there isn't a whole lot of evidence that it gives a boost during law school admissions, but during law school itself, it can allow people to apply to diversity positions that they would otherwise have been ineligible for.

Oh, I know they can apply, but anecdotally, I really haven't seen people get those diversity positions based on sexuality. And I'd suspect that any who do, do so because they can make a genuine connection with someone who's doing the hiring, which would probably be hard to do if you were lying about it. (I have seen GLBT students get positions with GLBT advocacy groups, but I doubt that's the kind of work people would be willing to lie about their sexuality to get.)

I would imagine that the type of person who goes to such lengths as to lie about their sexuality on their app will take any amount of boost it may provide, however negligible it may be

To that same extent, these are probably the same people who craft elaborate LSAT cheating schemes. And would do
anything to get that grade bumped from an A- to an A...

Probably exactly because it can't be verified. If people found out it gave you an URM boost, 90% of law school applicants would become bisexual over night.

Well, sure, but mostly I don't think firms care, since you can't exactly put "the gay partner" into the strategic photos on the firm website.

LGBTQPA isn't a boost. It's a recruiting tool. They wanna be gay friendly so good recruits who happen to be gay, will pick their firm/school/company.

It's not the school that will catch you, it's the bar.

Can't catch every instance of lying. But the lying will catch up to whomever is making the lies. If you're nefarious enough to lie on a law school application, it's likely you'll lie again at some point, and lies have a funny way of exposing the liar. Or the bar will get you.

You can lie about a ton of stupid stuff and nobody will catch you. But it won't really help either.
Any lie big enough to make a difference will be more detectable though.

Also wondered about this. Also wondered about lying (not suggesting it, just wondering about it) as far as ties go when searching for a job. If you're trying to convince an employer you're genuinely interested in living in region x, how hard is it go "Oh, yeah, we used to come here all the time when I was a kid. A friend of my dad's had a cabin here and we spent the summers here. I fell in love with the area."

That could get tricky really quick if they start asking specific questions about the area you visited, etc...

I have had several friends this has happened to during OCI. The stories are painful to hear.

Yeah, we have to remember these are lawyers we're talking about. They're used to detecting BS lol.
