Compared to lower ranked schools, their median GPAs and lsat scores aren't astronomical. So what is it?

Small class size allows them to be more selective.

Stanford's numbers are only that low because it lets them be that low; they could be higher if Faye wanted them to be. S, like Y, is comparatively more interested in having an interesting class than a class of 3.9/173s. And it's harder to be an interesting person than to get a 173.

Also, they are so strong on other US News factors that they don't have to care about LSAT -- so they don't.
This is really what you would expect from the other top schools. At the end of the day Stanford gets that missing 2 more questions on the LSAT correlates with absolutely nothing - so instead they pick people with skills that they think do correlate with great lawyering.

The crazy thing is how easy it is to get into every non y/s school. Just have the numbers and bam.
