I took LSAT in February with a sub-par 170 after having all my last 20 practice tests within the range of 174~180, and got 179 in June.

Now I am focusing on applications, I am not sure whether an addendum will be needed for a 9 point difference? It seems that some schools ask for addendum on large rises in LSAT scores, does 9 qualify as large?

Thanks, and I will be happy to share my LSAT preparation experiences (as a non native speaker)!
There's still room for improvement. Retake.

But seriously, I doubt there is need. I think you risk coming off as a douche if you attempt to explain away a 170 as some sort of choke on test day. They'll intuitively understand that if you get a 170 and retake, you're a consistent high scorer of the test.

Keep in mind though, that I (unfortunately) didn't have this issue to deal with during my application so there are probably more credible sources than myself. Oh and grats on that AWESOME score!
Yeah coming off as a douche is what I would not like to see definitely.

Thanks for the advice!

Congrats! Mind if I steal a point or two?

An addendum really shouldn't be necessary for this, but some schools require you to submit one for a score jump of 5+ points so you should still submit one (but only for the schools that ask for it).

Since you clearly choked both times, an addendum would be silly. I hope you're studying for October.

Don't write an addendum.

I had a somewhat similar jump and didn't write an addendum. I don't think one is needed.

Esp. considering 170 is already better than 98% of test takers.

A 170 is in the 97.4th percentile, whereas a 179 is in the 99.9th percentile. Although it is a 9-point difference, it is only a 2.5% increase. :P

To write an addendum for this would be like a professional basketball player who scored 100 points in his most recent game explaining why he was only able to score 80 points in the game before that.
In his HoF application, Chamberlain explained why he only played on the level of Kobe Bryant in one of the games haha
