Using the same person as a recommender and evaluator... Bad idea?

Do you even need an evaluator? Most schools only require 2 letters of rec, which are more than sufficient.

Don't bother with evaluations. Adcomms don't care about them at all.

Yea, unless the school requires them, evaluations aren't really worth the effort.

However, if you're getting one, ask someone besides a LoR-writer. If you find a professor who gave you an A, they'll most likely just circle 10s. Which is why they're not very useful.

They are useless - they can probably only hurt
