Will a 60 credit hour upward trend be able to offset

Post by sarcasticzebra » Tue Jul 16, 2013 1:46 pm

I have had some rough patches in undergrad, though my accum is higher than a 3.0 and I have 60 credit hours left and so far I have been getting all A's, in prior semesters I have some semesters of straight Withdrawals which will look bad to admcomms, but after all the Ws, I will have a 60 credit hour upward trend of no Ws and As, do think that credit hour trend can offset the psychological factor of seeing the excessive Ws? yes, no?

Do you have a reason for the Ws that can be articulated without sounding like a cop-out or whining?

Not an expert on this, but I would suggest writing an addendum maybe? Explain the rough patches and how you've grown from them. Show that based on the upward trend and no more W's that you have learned from mistakes in the past.

I'm not saying this will work, but you cannot let a bunch of W's go unexplained in my view.

Yeah, this is important to my comment. No addendum if your reason is "I partied a lot and didn't go to class and my professors didn't understand"

Possibly, but bear in mind that many law school applicants have upward grade trends. Slacking off to some degree during freshman year and then working hard to compensate for said slackery after having an "I want to go to law school" epiphany is pretty ubiquitous among applicants.

So although I am testing in the 170s on practice diagnostics and my gpa is above a 3.0 am I still doomed from all the Ws? My reason for the Ws, is having a child with special needs and two ill parents, but how would I show documentation to verify all of that, without it being pages long?

You're not going to be doomed by sole virtue of your Ws, no; it's ultimately your final GPA that law schools will care about.

You can write a personal statement (or diversity, depending on how you spin it) on this that would also serve as an explanatory essay for the Ws. You don't need to verify this stuff with pages of information - you just need to craft an essay that gets the information in there.

Make sure your reason is legit. Sounding like a whiner will hurt you even more. Overall they will just look at your accum gpa.
