Cool Idea for application

I'm a Mass Communication Specialist in the U.S. Navy.

I am the photographer, videographer, journalist, broadcaster and public affairs liaison. People like me do it all in the military.

So, with this in mind, I'm considering having a shipmate of mine make of video of me explaining why I want to go to XYZ law school.

I found this video on youtube and thought it was very clever.

Should I do something similar?

I would say no, but I am pretty boring. Also, if it goes wrong, you will be THAT person.

I would not.

As a fellow military member (9.5 years AD AF), be careful saying "people like me do it all in the military." I guess you just meant do it all related to your career field (PA I assume), which is fine. A little humility goes a long way.

There are dudes sleeping on the side of some mountain right now (as opposed to being logged into a computer), so we most certainly do not "do it all." Thank goodness for those guys...

I think we all know what school you're talking about sending this video to, but I wouldn't do it if I were you. If anything, use the video for Option 5 at GULC. Don't send in extraneous application materials unless the school asks for them, because adcomms already have enough shit to go through as is.
This. If something could help you, schools would ask for it. They are not looking for creative people. They are looking for candidates that fall into predetermined bands of LSAT scores and GPAs.

No. You are not the star of your own Lifetime Original movie where your uniqueness and moxie will win over all the naysayers. You will get into HYS if you have the numbers. If you don't, you won't. Being "creative" will not tip the scales. You'll just look like a weirdo.

Also dude, be a little more humble about your service. It's great and all, but occasionally you're going to run into another vet and it's obvious that you are not a SEAL/RECON/Ninja Fighter Pilot who "does it all!"

You can't assume the bolded. He does it all. 8)

*Sidenote, I'm with everyone else...I wouldn't do this lol.

It stopped being creative the moment you linked to a YouTube video of someone else doing it.

Do it for your reach. Like Harvard.

Outside of really far reaches I would emphatically say "No, no no". Keep in mind that admissions officers travel together in large packs Sept-Dec, and this is the kind of stuff that gets [politely stated] "discussed" on the road.

I'm a huge fan of differentiation, I talk about it in about 2/3rds of my blog posts. But this is not an audition for "The Bachelor" but a process where you judgement and decision-making skills are fine-pointed by many admissions offices. I don't think it is worth the risk or the potential for bad PR.

Someone in the reject thread posted that Georgetoen didn't even view her video.
This would be a complete waste of time.

OP: I know you are looking for alternatives. What you have to do is study hard for the LSAT.

When I was in admissions someone once said to me "I will do anything to get into your law school" and my response was "well, will you study?"

Louie based on your PS I don't think you would make a video that would help you. You need to cool your jets and take a less abrasive approach to admissions or I worry you will underperform your #s.

Nah, man. I don't think AdComms are looking for applicants who can string together a few chords on a guitar... they want applicants with stellar numbers. Focus on the LSAT.

Let me cross-reference some advice given lawyers about what to wear to the office. Lawyers have a uniform. Once you are in uniform, you blend in and people rarely notice what you're wearing. In Austin and Portland, that might include polos on some days. In DC and NYC, your uniform is always a dark suit and white shirt. As soon as you stray from the uniform, you stand out and are destroyed.

A video resume is you breaking the lawyer's uniform. This is a boring profession full of stuffy, conservative people. I know this first hand. One of the schools I applied to (not the highest ranked school I got into) told me they dinged me because I included a color photograph on my resume.

ETA: I am glad they told me that so soon because I was able to change my resume to what the profession expects when I sent out the bulk of my applications.

Could have sworn I knew where this was going. I've seen too much of the internet.

I meant doing it all within the scope of communications. If you want to go that route though... it's called combat camera. Go watch Full Metal Jacket.

Many of my kind have gone down range.
