The richest lawyers are personal injury lawyers that handle major class action lawsuits. Some lawyers literally earned hundreds of millions doing asbestos work in its heyday. This sort of litigation has waned somewhat, and even at its zenith most personal injury lawyers were not nearly so successful. As a whole, personal injury work is one of the less lucrative areas.

The most lucrative area otherwise is probably big law--that is, working at a large law firm that represents big business clients. Associates start at around $160,000 a year and partners can make upwards of $2 or $3 million a year.

I have seen on the web that partner earnings go from around 400k to 5-6 million.

Yes, that is true. Some partners even make $8 million or more. I was just ballparking it.
