Well I would say, you should never withdraw from a school until you are 100% sure you have other options and do not plan to go there. But I would just contact the school and be honest, I would say something in the lines of you thought you were not being able to attend because of family reasons health reasons etc....give a reason why you could not attend and had to withdraw and why your circumstances have changed....

I didn't withdraw per se, just never deposited to a school last year, and I contacted the dean of admissions two months after the deposit deadline to see if anything could be done and was told that there was still space if I wanted to enroll. You could always contact admissions. The worst thing they'll do is say no.

It could be the kind of scenario where someone gets accepted to a higher ranked school, withdraws, and then for some reason has their offer of admission rescinded from the higher ranked school. Could be that they lied during scholarship negotiations or on their actual application.

Nothing shady going on here. I just have a step-child involved and the one choice would be long distance. I withdrew as the sig-o was not particularly receptive to the idea. She is coming around. Acted a little too quickly on that one.

Unfortunately, because most students reuse applications, the misrepresentation would likely be universal (unless they applied to Yale and had the same name as an Olympic gold medalist and lied and said it was them on just that one application). Either way, I know schools inform each other of ED admittance, so would they not sound the alarm for this sort of a thing as well?

I was thinking more along the lines of what happened at Michigan a while back where Dean Z called out someone for lying in scholarship negotiations. Some schools have specific essay questions, and an applicant could lie on one of those and not have lied on any other part of the application. I'm not saying it's common, but I could see it happen. At that point an applicant could be desperate enough to go to schools they previously had withdrawn from.

Aww... I thought you were talking about the lying about being an Olympic gold medalist part. Your real version is much less exciting.

I can see how that would be a let down.

There were people on TLS last spring who did this. I didn't pay much attention, but at least one person was successful. I don't remember the school (not a T14), but I do remember that the person was above both medians for that school.

I had already been admitted, it was only a couple days that have passed, and the deposit deadline has not yet passed. Gotta deposit by tomorrow at 5pm, though. :

The last few years, about 2-4 weeks after the deadline I've sent out an email to admits who didn't deposit letting them know they have been withdrawn but that if they think that's a mistake to contact me. Both years I've had people respond asking if they could still pay their deposit. I don't know what they would have done had I not contacted them first, but I'm not trying to be a jerk about things. There's no benefit to me to be prideful or something and be like "Sorry, bro. Maybe that stuff flies at (insert law school here), but not in Lubbock!" (Having Kingsbury back has given everyone mad swagger around here...haha).

Maybe back in the day when classes were full and law schools were in the driver's seat (or at HYS, but even then there's a sliver of students that even they fight over and would welcome back in a heartbeat) a school might say no. But in today's atmosphere, no one is going to cut off their nose to spite their face.
