I really don't like when they calculate commuting and lunch into "hours worked."

Eh. I consider work all time elapsed from when I leave my apartment until I return.

Well, then, in that case I had no idea I regularly worked 70-80 hour work weeks.

If spending most of your time on work doesn't sound like fun, biglaw isn't for you long term. Don't go into this or a similar high-commitment field without understanding what will be expected of you. You'll be on call in some capacity 24/7 for the rest of your time at the firm. Of that, you can expect to work about 60-90 hours in a given week with lots depending on the specifics of your situation. You will almost certainly pull the occasional 100+ hour week, but also a number at 40 hours or fewer. If you find the work you do and a chance to build that work into a marketable business really interesting, it's quite possibly worth the effort. If not, put in your 2-3 years and find something more amenable.

If you do this all year long, and we assume:
3 weeks vacation
2 weeks holiday
No sick days or personal days

5 weeks off during the year? That seems absurd to me.....

Edit: Absurd as in a lot. I would expect to take about 2 weeks off total. (I've only taken 6 days of vacation since July 2011, so that's my basis for that claim).

I'm at a midsize firm and "A. The Full Time Job" very accurately describes my schedule. The only exception is that I take about half the vacation/holiday time.

Another thing to note is that if you're busy and find what you're doing mildly interesting, working 12+ hours a day flies by.

I love playing skyrim, I played it once for 10< hours a day, wanted to kill myself at the end of it.

I currently do this on a regular basis, except it's usually 14+ hours per day. If you have a giant pile of work to do, and it requires a little bit of brain power, you're not bored all day, you're stressed out that you don't have enough time to get everything that needs to be done done. At least in my 1.5 years of experience, I've found that to be the case.

Edit: Experience NOT as a lawyer, but in another demanding field.

I'm currently drinking a giant glass of wine because I've been so stressed out from work, so yes

BUT! I'm not a lawyer. I'm in a different field that works similar if not more hours than lawyers. So maybe lawyers aren't as stressed as bankers

not ever taking a vacation seems tragic to me.

and the 2 weeks of holidays is public holidays- new years day, mlk, presidents day (i know our new york firm had both), memorial, the 4th, labor, 2 at thanksiving and 2 at christmas = 2 weeks

Yeah, my current job blows. (Case in point: working 20 hours on presidents day, which we had "officially" off).

That's still a little different from playing Skyrim though. I would probably want to kill myself if I had to play something like SC or LoL 10+ hours/day.

Anyways I just assumed biglaw would be 7 days a week, 9 to like midnight every day. As long as I'm not getting up early I don't really care.

I don't add my total commute time to working hours and claim that's how much I worked. I just don't mentally feel like I'm done with work until I'm home for the day. Commuting sucks.
