When will ABA approve the first online school? And where?

It's going to happen at some point, there's no doubt about that.

Two years? Four? More?

Will it be a T3/4 school just looking to make somre more money/increase market share? Or will it be a T1 school trying to be on the leading edge? I can't imagine it would be a T14 schools, they seem too conservative and not as much to gain.

And for some context, not all online schools are Phoenix Online. My wife attends Uni of Southern California's Masters in Teaching program online. She attends each class one or two times a week through a skypeish program. She can watch her teacher lecture, participate in discussions, set up group studies etc.

i think for the next decade or so the trend is going to be closing currently open schools, not opening new experimental ones

As far as I know it will not be ABA accredited. In order to be ABA accredited you must....well read the following.

"Earning an online law degree poses several unique challenges. No online law school is accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA); however, forty-nine states require that law school graduates earn a degree accredited by the ABA in order to take the bar exam needed to practice law."

However, there is a caveat. Schools are allowed to let their students earn a maximum of 12 hours online and they will be recognized towards their degree. I believe California allows a maximum of 15.

You might be right but you'd have to have your head in the sand to think that there won't be at least one in the next 10-20 years.

I suspect that this will come in fits and starts. Before there is a full out online program, I expect the ABA to alter there policy to allow a larger number of online credits as part of a traditional program. When this is absorbed with a big yawn, and they accept that it does not fundamentally change much of anything, they will eventually loosen the restrictions to the point where some school will be able to offer a mostly online program. Perhaps a school that already offers a part-time program will create a hybrid program where most classes are online, but students meet in person one weekend a month for in-person sessions (something similar to some of the Executive MBA programs).

Online schooling is here to stay. In graduate degree programs other than law, online programs (or primarily online) can be found at schools such as Columbia, Stanford, & Harvard. Unlike medical school, which poses considerable logistics challenges with various lab courses, I see no obstacles that would prevent a school from being able to create a quality online law school experience.

This does not mean that the ABA will get on board anytime soon, but eventually they will be drug into this by some school(s) looking to extended there market.

Soon, because the worthless TTT Deans that run the ABA Section on Legal Education are undoubtedly frothing to stuff their pockets with the student loan money for olds to go to garbage online schools that Rubio offered the other night. It'll be a sad day.

I hate to burst your bubble, but these are meaningless regardless of when ABA revising their guidelines.

Ummm no, these factors definitely are not meaningless. Just look at how they can really make a difference in the quality of a student's legal education.
that is a disgrace

Who cares? No one except your parents would ever give you a job out of an online law school so it's silly to speculate about it.

This is not true in other fields now. While employment in the legal field is a throw back in many ways it is hard to imagine that they can continue to ignore reality indefinitely.

Firms like prestige. Online degrees are the complete opposite of prestige. hth

Online/offline education is not a toggle switch.

Most employers would find a Master in Computer Science from Stanford more prestigious than a similar degree from a school such as George Mason University. The math on this does not change if the Stanford student earned this degree online.

Crazy awesome. Extra points for "almost twice the educational value of Stanford."
