Hard to say...

As has been aptly noted, many of the best law candidates (as well as many less competitive ones) have chosen in the last two years to forego law school altogether, while other applicants are just waiting out the recession. The more passionate applicants will apply now that things are a little less competitive, if they haven't started other, equally or more desirable, careers. Any of the best candidates will never apply because they have gone into other professions and are doing well. Other candidates now realize that law would have been wrong for them, and in that way the bad economy has done the legal field a great service.

It's a complicated question to answer, but I expect that applications will begin to rise again, now that big firms have begun hiring more associates and paying them well again.

I doubt apps will rise. Also doubt they'll fall much further. As with most bubbles, it should start to stabilize in the next few years. Having said that, the number of people who think law school is a good idea (let alone highly qualified applicants gunning for the T-14) should stabilize somewhere around their current number.

At least that's what I keep telling myself (2013 applicant).

If people currently entertaining the idea of law school--not to mention those who are actively pursuing it--are hearing that apps are down by a significant margin this year, don't you guys think the applications will rise next year (or at least not decline)?

Well, seeing as Yale's yield is over 80%, they probably lose a lot of students to New Haven. Not to mention the occasional Harvard enrollee. What shocks me more is that ~40 students actually turn down Yale (I imagine most of those are west-coasters who'll take their chances at Stanford, rather than move 3,000 miles).

Also, not as many potential law students research their decision like you might expect.

When you're on TLS and participating in a community that puts as much thought into the right LSAT score, school, etc., it's easy to think that everybody else spends close to as much time and effort doing their research, but many many people don't.

Yeah I know several friends who are going to law school, but put no research into it. I know one person who has a 3.9 GPA, but didn't really try for the LSAT because she's happy going to the University of Tennessee law. I think she scored in the 150's. I swear when I heard that I wanted to scream at her to retake the test and go to Yale. It's just kind of strange how little thought some people put into these kinds of things.

People will avoid grad schools more in bad economies than good ones.

This will apply to us, medical schools, and other grad schools too.

I say good. The less people in the room, the less people trying to eat off my buffet.

Except that historically, the opposite has been true. Grad school has always been seen as a way to hide out from a tough job market.
