How hard is it to defer admissions?

I applied early decision to Michigan and just got in, however, I took a "gap year" job thinking that it would be just that, a job to fill the time. However, it turns out I like the job quite a bit but law school is still the ultimate goal. Do you think I could defer my admission until next year?

Michigan is my dream school and I would not think of attending any of school.

I can't imagine there's much to lose in asking.

If they won't, withdraw and reapply next year.

True. I thought I didn't have a chance at getting in, 163/3.9 so I am a bit scared to withdraw and reapply. I guess life would be too good if I could have it all.

with the numbers you have I would be hard pressed to withdraw and re-apply next cycle. Solid acceptance with borderline numbers.

Or you can withdraw, retake the LSAT while you work and then get into HYS

I can't speak to Michigan specifically, but I applied to a host of schools last year and deferred a year due to military obligation. Almost every school was completely fine with it. Two of them required a seat deposit, which I wasn't able to do since I hadn't really chosen a school, but if that's the case with Michigan it sounds like you'd be ok with that.

Prepare a semi-formal email explaining your reasons for deferral and send it to whatever admissions officer you've been in contact with.

Good luck! And big congrats!!

Oh Christ. Okay, retake in June regardless. If you get a 167 or better, drop your deferral/acceptance and ED to UVA or UPenn next year. Best case scenario, retake for a 173 or better and have fun at H.

That.

163/3.9 makes you a reverse splitter. If you're willing to wait a year, retake the LSAT and score over 170.

I think Michigan ED means a summer start, so he probably has to decide prior to that.

This is correct. I will be starting in the summer. Best case scenario, I get a deferral as I am also reconsidering law school after deep research on employment stats and total law school cost.
