I always wonder whats better a 176/3.5 or 172/4 obviously better is an odd question i guess I am just asking what do admissions look on more favorably?

Schools care about their medians. A 3.5 is below the median for some schools, and a 4.0 is above the median for all schools. A 172 is above the median for virtually every single school. So in general, a 172/4.0 candidate will have a much better cycle.

It gets more tricky when you're comparing a 174/3.96 to a 177/3.92 (so medians aren't even an issue any more). But in reality both are pretty much equivalent and the only schools that wouldn't be basically an auto-admit would by YS, both of which are well-known for giving softs serious consideration. So the only real time these two students wouldn't -both- be admitted to a school is for schools that aren't just pure number-based, anyway.
