From one who wrote me a letter before, I got an automatic reply that she was on sabbatical and that she would try to reply as soon as she could.

I've read in some other grad school forums that you should send a follow-up after a week or so... but I'm curious what that looks like.

Have you tried calling them? One prof I emailed never responded but when I called her she was willing to write me one.

Haven't done that, but I'll give it a shot on Monday. For the professor who's on leave, any thoughts on how to send a follow-up email? Not sure I'll be able to reach her by phone.

For the prof on leave, that might be tricky since they stay less current w/ their emails. Follow up via email and also try to get in touch with his/her secretary or support staff. Usually, they can provide some direction...say a different email address or phone number.

I'd also suggest writing something like "time sensitive" in the subject line. My professors sort of skim the subjects and won't get around to it unless I follow up more than once or indicate that its urgent.
