Hello, I was recently invited to join an honor society (Golden Key) at my university.
There is a fee to join and I usually don't pay attention to these things since I don't have money to be throwing around.
However since I am applying to law school and I don't really have any significant softs (or none at all) on my resume (other than the usual stuff that they give you for good GPA at school) I was wondering if it would benefit me at all to join, just to bump up my resume. I hadn't heard of this honor society ever before they sent me an email, does anybody knows if it is well recognized or if is just not worth it? I feel kind of silly asking Thanks

Golden Key is the most worthless of all honor societies. I wouldn't pay a cent to joint. Outside of Phi Beta Kappa, no honor society is going to catch an adcomm's attention, and even that is just a small plus.

Yeah, I was afraid of that, I really haven't done anything out of the ordinary to be asked to join any society that is actually prestigious, thanks for your answer.

If you have the extra money and your resume is a little bare then joining wouldn't be a bad thing. I joined only because my mother got the invitation and thought it was a HUGE deal...I didn't have the heart to tell her otherwise.

It's totally a scam. I did a google search when I received the invite a few years ago. I read that adcomms see it as useless ... it only really says your parents have money to throw at enhancing your softs. Your GPA will speak for itself when you apply. I mentioned it to a few close professors and they all chuckled at it. Good for you for looking into it beforehand ... it was too late to help some of my friends who got suckered in.

You have to hand it to them though, Golden Key is a really good racket.
