I am really struggling over whether or not to write a diversity statement, so hopefully you all can help me.
I initially grew up in a town where I was the only member of a minority religion. Was planning to write about my initial experience with proselytizing, misunderstandings about my religion, etc., and how those experiences shape I how I deal with differences of opinion now.
To be clear, I faced no discrimination or obstacles of any kind, just misunderstandings. I am not a URM, and do not come from a socio-economically disadvantaged background. These experiences also happened a long time ago - in elem / grade school. They did play a large part in how I view the world now, however.
It obviously depends on how I write it, but is this topic worth writing at all? I can't imagine it's particulary unique, since many people of minority religions in towns probably go through this type of experience.
Thanks for your time and any input.
