Alter Page Margins on Resume?

Post by rudolph14237 » Tue Sep 25, 2012 12:28 pm

Is there a problem with customizing the top page margin from 1" to .5"?

Or should I just not mess with the margins? Is more than one page a bad thing?

Not sure about the margins, but I think the general consensus is to limit your resume to 1 page.

I don't see a problem with changing the margins, as long as it doesn't look ridiculous. (Which is subjective, of course.)

Moving the margins is fine. Just use your best judgment and make sure it looks good (e.g. don't have text starting literally right at the top of the page).

went to a panel and I think it was Dean Geiger who said that it was okay to do more than 1 page

It's okay to do more than one page if you have been a working professional for 5-10 years and you have a lot to put on there. It's a dumb move if you're doing at as a K-JD and you're wanting to include your McDonald's employment AND your pizza deliverly job you had for 2 months, along with the 20 clubs you were in.

OP-altering margins is fine. Just make sure the form uploaded looks fine and doesn't cut off any text.

I read somewhere (Anna Ivey maybe?) that it shouldn't go below .7" so I put my margins there. I'd be surprised if .5" is a problem though

You don't want to make it too small as interviewers like to write notes on them. So it depends more on the layout of your resume (block of text right at .7 versus centered name at .5 with plenty of room around it.)

Edit: misread...for admissions no one cares. But for jobs, one page it is.
