The Washington Monthly makes a compelling argument that we value the wrong qualities in schools and thus misapply ratings and rankings. I think the argument applies to graduate and professional schools by extension.

According to these rankings, I went to the number one undergrad in the nation. I'll take it lol

Their ranking is skewed...they rank for research based on the number of PhD's awarded in certain subject areas. Some schools just have more PhD slots than others, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are better for research. The quality of some of the PhD programs ranked high because of the raw number of PhD'ers is way less than some of the other PhD programs present on the list further down. Just food for thought.

Agreed. I'd rather value schools by something like employment outcomes and cost, rather than these bullshit categories.

Yeah, pretty much BS. But it is cool to finally see my UG on a top 100 list, lmao. It's normally in the top 150s. So, hey, awesome. And no, I clearly didn't choose my UG based on rankings. I chose it because its campus was beautiful..... don't ask. I ended up paying over 30k a year for a pretty campus, lmao.

My school got killed because of its cost of attendance...just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's a bad school. If anything, it's more of an investment because you have more opportunities coming out of my undergrad than almost 75% of the schools ranked ahead of it on this list.

My UG is a solid 25 spots lower on that list, thus it is stupid.

I can't believe my UG is #2. This is such BS, but funny.

Yeah I got into Princeton and MIT, but decided to go to UT El Paso because they were ranked higher. Thanks Washington Monthly.

You seem angry.

Very interesting. Obviously, more conventional rankings better correlate with actual employment outcomes and the like, which I think is a bit more pertinent.

Right up there with Cooley as far as focusing on shit that actually matters to prospectives.

Schools should be ranked to answer, "where should I go" --not which is best for the public
This is dumb.

I think he's upset that someone would rank one ROTC program over another? Isn't the whole motto "An Army of One."

Texas A&M better than Stanford and all Ivy... no.

Seems like an arbitrary/silly way to rank a university considering, by this system, Patriotism and being on the Class borders are valued most highly. But to be fair, they aren't trying to claim their ranking system should replace conventional ranking systems, rather this is just another way to rank colleges.

Ivory tower shitboomers will find any contorted way to avoid discussing placement power. Disgusting.
