My numbers are well above both medians at Penn; what can I do to not get YPed?
1) Should I visit the school and note that I visited in one of the essays?
2) How many of the optional essays should I write?

Visit, make a good impression, and write a compelling "Why Penn?" If waitlisted, write a LOCI reaffirming your interest.

I'm in a situation similar to the OP's and I am planning to visit either this week or next. Any suggestions on how to get the most out of my visit? To the OP, good luck this fall

Genuine YP at top schools is largely a myth. Just write a good essay (if Penn still does those), and might as well visit if you're local.

According to LSN, the chances for a student with a 175/4.14 are 57%, while someone with a 171/3.87 has a 76%. Myth? I guess it's possible people with higher numbers are simply writing far worse optional essays, but seems like there's gotta be some YP going on...

175/4.14 and 171/3.87 are oddly specific.

Perhaps OP has the ability to raise their GPA from 3.87 to 4.14

Call up the school and ask them to set you up with a student for a tour. Ask the student questions about student life, grading, clubs, etc... Make sure to get a picture of the student body from their own eyes.
Eat in the dining hall, and try to find large groups of people sitting together and talking, hopefully about non-legal stuff. Drop in, tell them you're a prospective student, and gauge their reaction. Ask them some questions.
After the student tour, sit with someone from the admissions office and talk to them about the school. Have some questions specific to their programs. Ask them what they look for in a candidate. Make sure to constantly talk about the things you liked during the tour and why you want to go to Penn.

I was using those as examples to show that people with lower numbers have a better chance of getting into the school, which suggests YP... Does that not make sense?
