I would email admissions and see what they say. They've been very open and friendly and will probably help you figure out what's best/easiest.airbud wrote:(Yes, this was originally posted elsewhere. Currently active Marine. Applying to law school either this fall or next. UT is my top choice (167/3.85). Here's my situation that I'll lay out for you all before I get in touch with admissions, if necessary:
I want to start school in the fall of 2014. Normally, I'd apply during the fall of 2013 for that cycle. However, I'll be deployed from July 2013 to January 2014 and cannot speak to what the internet availability will be.
Should I apply this fall (plan on non-binding ED), hopefully get accepted, and defer admission for a year? I would assume that a deployment is a legitimate reason to defer. Getting accepted this year would provide several tangible benefits that I can touch on if you'd like.
UT Law's website states the following with respect to deferrals:
"You may request, in writing, a deferral for one year. However, we can give no assurance that your request will be granted. Each request will be considered on its own merits. Extensions of more than one year are rarely granted. However, a request for deferral because of service in Teach for America will be granted automatically for up to two years."
Let me know what yall think! Thanks.
