Buying a law school right now seems to be a bad investment...

I am an Aggie and love my school to death, but this is revoltingly stupid. I was in disbelief when they announced it.

Texas A&M School of Law? So is tuition going to double now?

I like it. They tried it before with South Texas but got blocked by the lege. They're now in a better position to do it.
In addition to giving A&M a law school, it also gives them a good foothold in the metroplex, which has long been dominated by UT.
Finally, I expect the school to move quickly from the rankings basement and eventually find a spot around 75-100 if not better.
ETA: I expect tuition to stay the same for in-state (it's on par with UH) and they'll simply add $10k for out.

Two public law schools in DFW, MOAR lawyers just what is needed. Although Tech is probably the biggest loser in all of this. Who will go to Lubbock now?

Is Baylor going to try and find a way to block this too?

They did a good job on Rice, but this is Methodist territory... it's up to SMU.

As a txwes student, not really happy about having to be thought of as an Aggie. I'll graduate before the shift takes place but I question whether the new ownership will affect tuition at all. The school already has plenty of people willing to come in for $30k/yr so I couldn't see why A&M would want to give themselves a pay cut unless the legislature requires it.

I doubt they will change tuition much for in-state. Where they are now would put them between UTexas and Houston.
Current Texas Tuitions:
Code: Select all
Public:
U Texas 30,243
*******
Houston 28,130
Tx Tech 22,190
Tx Sthn 16,262
Private:
Baylor 43,573
SMU 42,057
St Mary 29,406
Tx Wesl 28,790 ***
S Texas 26,850

This is a terrible idea.
It's also strange because it's SUPER FAR away from A&M.

You mean why Rice doesn't have a law school?

Because if Rice had a law school that wasn't in the top 25, it would hurt the prestige of the institution (same with MIT, Princeton, GA Tech, CMU, Brown, Cal Tech, Dartmouth, etc.)

This also makes Dallas really crowded now, given that North Texas is opening up a school in 2014.

How does it make Dallas any more crowded than it was before, in light of UNT?

A&M will aggressively seek to improve that ranking, creating more of a competitor for SMU than currently exists in Wesleyan.

I'm not sure how two top 100 schools totaling 500 students per class in a metro of 6.3million people qualifies as crowded.

You don't think more of a peer school will make it more difficult for SMU grads to find good jobs?

Well you add a third school (UNT) in addition to all the Baylor, TT, Tulsa, OSU and UT grads that come to DFW.

Presumably this is the same reason TCU has never expressed interest in the law school.

I would call it crowded, considering,
