Why x school

If a school doesnt have a why x school essay is it unwise to write one. I have a (in my opinion) compelling essay for why i want to go to a specific t 14 school. My mentor went there who recently died. His experiences as a lawyer really inspired me to want to go to law school. Is writing about that a good reason to write a why x even if its not in the app. I would talk about other reasons as well but that would be the basis for it.

Don't bother, CCN doesn't care as much about Why X essays and you should get in regardless. If you have to mention it do it in your personal statement.

Yeah, isn't "Why Columbia?" pretty obvious?

You're in at at least 2 of 3 of the CCN.
Shot at HYS.
Don't write one. They all know why you want to go there.
Yale explicitly says that they don't want to hear Why Yale.

If it's for Chicago, I'd say write it.

You need to dig around and find the answer for your particular school. Yes, Asha said on the Yale blog to not do a Why Yale, but on Chicago's it says this:
May I submit a diversity statement or “Why Chicago” essay?
You may, but please do so only when they are important to your application. Remember that you are trying to be concise and genuine.
