"People who go to law school don't get a job"

when people hear that I'm applying for admissions to law school, they all start talking about supposed unemployment statistics that say most people who go to law school end up without a job.

Does anyone just get tired of people telling them about this?

A lot of this talk usually comes from people who have considered going to law school, but have decided to either work or go for a PhD. I just think that with ANY career path, you risk not being able to get a job (right away)...

Yes, but it's true.

Few of those other career paths charge upwards of $150,000 for their poor chances at a job, brah.

Almost everybody I know who isn't well-versed about the current state of the legal profession is like "wow you're in law school you're going to be a gazillionaire all lawyers are rich derp derp derp."

Lol Phd job prospects are even worse than law job prospects. Also, around half of law students getting legal employment does not equal "nobody gets a job." I fuckig hate extreme statements like this. However, it depends on the school.

For real UN-employment statistics - check this thread:

http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 1&t=181723

and then read Law School Transparency

and then if you have more questions about the job market, please ask away.

Some career paths more than others run that risk. The reality right now is that many professions are suffering, including the legal one. You've just got to be realistic about what you're getting yourself into. Get into the best school you can with as limited debt as possible.

Shouldn't you be giving your mentor advice on how to help her fledgling network that is tanking?

+1. Pretty annoying. Then they all look at me like I have three heads when/if I tell them otherwise and that I plan to make $40K.

I guess it'd be equally as annoying if they were telling me that nobody gets a job.

I think you accidentally misquoted me - I didn't say that.

Perhaps I misconstrued what you wrote, but the quote-function copied it verbatim. Regardless, it was a vain attempt to make a joke using pretzel bites as a punchline.

LOL PhD students get paid to attend (i.e. they don't go 200k in debt to be unemployed).

I know bro. I was a PhD student. Doesn't mean they get jobs. HTH

Edit: Also, not all law students pay 200,000 to attend.

It does mean that mean that comparing JDs to PhDs makes no sense. Debt is the reason people are so negative about the JD jobprospects.

Shouldn't they be mad at their poor decision skills instead?

Who is they? There are two groups of people in the sentence you are quoting.

People that go into debt that can't afford it. You know, the whole education bubble concept.

how responsive. anything else to add other than sarcasm? the point still stands that the main reason why people get worked up about low JD job prospects is the debt that students take to get there. So, like I said, it really makes no sense to compare their situation to PhD students, who take on little to no debt.
