Do they really average?
I'm sitting on a 3.82 and a 170 with laser beam focus on getting into NYU. I know NYU says they average LSATs, but I've heard and read people say that that's not actually the case. I figure I just need a 171, and I'd give myself a 50/50 chance at getting it, so I'd love to have another chance at getting it, especially if the averaging business is just lip service.
Anybody have a clear read on this? Thanks, y'all.
PS I read a lot but don't ever post here but this forum is really cool. It's one of the best examples I can think of of the Internet actually living up to its potential. So thanks to everybody who contributes.

Why do you think you'd have a 50/50 chance with a 171 and a 3.82?zidane13 wrote:I'm sitting on a 3.82 and a 170 with laser beam focus on getting into NYU. Re: Do they really average?
Sorry, I was unclear. I'd say I have a 50/50 chance of getting a 171 on a retake. From what LawSchoolNumbers says, it seems like I'd be good to go at NYU with a 171. With a 170, though, right on the edge of the cliff. Is averaging for real though?

You have as good of a chance at dropping to a 169 from a 170 as you do at going up to a 171.

Re: Do they really average?
Which is why the OP said he has a 50/50 chance of improving to 171. Of course, depending on the amount of prep the OP did the odds of improvement could be much more or less likely than even.Excellent117 wrote:You have as good of a chance at dropping to a 169 from a 170 as you do at going up to a 171.
If NYU averaged I'm almost certain I would not have gotten in.

I'm skeptical of averaging, given my own experience (an admittedly small sample)

Yeah, you really are smack on the border of admit/WL. Honestly if you applied early this cycle I think you woulda gotten in. If you apply ED I give you good odds as well.
But if NYU's what you really want and you think you have a 50/50 shot at improving, go ahead and retake. 1 point will probably get you in for sure, and 2-3 points might get you $$. I can't imagine a lower score the 2nd time will hurt you, unless it's significantly lower (I'm assuming from your post you think you did just about your PT score or slightly under-performed it).
If you do any better, they will look at your highest score, period.
If you don't retake, I'd ED. If you do and get a 171+, I think you're good to go RD.

Thanks for the help, gang. I was averaging about 172 on PTs, but you hear a lot about people dropping off a few points on the real deal. I'm gonna give it another shot. Go big or go home, right?

Same LSAT and slightly higher GPA than you and Im NYU/scholly secure. But I would suggest retaking to get some more money at CCN anyway. Good luck.

Re: Do they really average?
I had 3 LSAT scores, 171 and two mid-upper 160's, and I was able to sweep CCN. So, I highly doubt they averaged based on my experience.

Averaging is a myth. Retake, get a 173 and go to Harvard.

Why NYU? I have a close friend who went to NYU, took huge amounts of debt and was very bitter that their OCI people treated him like shit. BTW he has a job with a top firm nevertheless, but he hates on his school.

I'd like to do PI and NYU's LRAP is better than MVP.roaringeagle wrote:Why NYU? I have a close friend who went to NYU, took huge amounts of debt and was very bitter that their OCI people treated him like shit. BTW he has a job with a top firm nevertheless, but he hates on his school.

Re: Do they really average?
Wanted to thank the posters who set me straight about retaking - I retook in June and jumped to a 174, with which I will skate into NYU, hopefully with a bit of cash trailing in my wake. After being pretty jumpy on my first LSAT, I felt a lot better knowing how everything goes going into my second one and it felt much smoother and easier (with the exception of the goddamn -10 curve) and obviously went much better.
FWIW, I didn't study all that much for my retake, only retook a few PTs. I was just in a much steadier place mentally having jumped through all the hoops already and knowing that I was capable of getting a better score. Throwing this out there in case it's useful to anybody.
