I completely forgot that I was on scholastic probation after my first semester at my graduating university. I did transfer schools and join a fraternity, but I don't have any concrete excuse for my grades that semester. Is it in appropriate to go into some detail about the changes I was making and how they affected my grades, or is it simply OK to just write "I was placed on scholastic probation following my first semester at the University of Texas. I was immediately taken off after my second semester." I've just heard that being wordy isn't appropriate for an addendum of this nature, but I can't really explain much of anything if I avoid that route.

I agree being wordy is not appropriate, but I'd explain that it's grade-related is just so they know it's not disciplinary. "I was on probation at UT-Austin beginning January 2009 due to my fall semester grades, and I was taken off probation in July 2009 once my grades had improved." Since you don't have a concrete excuse, don't mess around with weak excuses.
