or is it just law school? If so, why is this? Obviously they are a good academic institution.

Both. For various reasons, some legit, some not. Indeed they are.

Not really sure why you are asking, but here is my impression: For undergrad, Brown is somewhat less impressive, Dartmouth is somewhat more impressive. Some graduate programs are some of the best in the country.

As to why, Ithaca is a great place, but may not attract the same type of students as some other locations. That said, the has been a great place for me to attend, people do seem pretty impressed with it, and it has gotten me where I need to go. Employers are overall pretty impressed with Cornell, and I would say it opens up nearly as many doors as a place like Penn.

I think its considered the least elite. This is because a) it has an acceptance rate far higher than any other ivy. Last year its acceptance rate was 18% while HYP was 6-8%. Even other Ivies have much lower acceptance rates (9% at Brown, 11% at Dartmouth)

(http://www.theivycoach.com/2015-ivy-lea ... stics.html)

And b) its half SUNY public school.

But as for being less academically impressive I don't know how to actually judge that.

Cornell has a large enrollment & is the only hybrid public/private university in the country. All of the other Ivies (Brown, Penn, Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Princeton & Columbia) are private schools.

P.S. Because three of its seven colleges are supported by public funds, some light heartedly refer to Cornell as SUNY-Ithaca.

P.P.S. It is not recommended, however, to use this slang reference in your Cornell Law School PS.

Agreed.

And yes, Cornell is generally considered the least impressive ivy. Fortunately, that doesn't matter to people who didn't attend an ivy.

Just my own personal opinion.

HP
Y
Penn (Wharton)
Columbia
Penn (Non Wharton)
Cornell Brown Dartmouth

I really don't think there is an appreciable difference in prestige between CBD. If anything, I think Cornell is better known and gets props from me for offering more programs.

What does this thread have to do with law school admissions?

And for what it's worth, I think most of us who aren't from the NE would consider only HYP "Ivy" in some magical, super-elite sense and the others just elite schools who happen to be in some ivy sports conference (without giving a flying friend about distinctions between them). Cornell, incidentally, is far more impressive than the others because of Andrew Bernard.

I don't care about anything I wrote in that last paragraph. Mostly I'm posting because I cannot grasp the point of this thread in this forum. Possibly, you're asking about the prestige of Ivy law schools, which seems like a ridiculous question. If that's not your question, however, this thread seems even less sensible. Sorry if I sound like an ass... maybe you could explain yourself?

What is Penn Wharton v. Penn non-Wharton? Do they have two undergraduate schools?

You do have point, particularly because the OP also had a thread discussing the lay prestige of Notre Dame just a few days ago. Seems he is quite interested in how people will perceive his degree(s). Still, I don't think he needs to explain himself. This an online forum, if everything posted was both new and relevant, there would be very little posted at all. Maybe it's not the best thread, but then again, you didn't have to click it!

Wharton is Penn's business school, and probably the clearcut/easiest route if your goal is UG->Wall Street.

Super Elite or Just Elite

Still got me a 160,000/year in my early twenties.

That's all that matters (at least for me).

I'm at CU for UG and I think the stigma is definitely related to our public/private status (I'm in a public college). I don't have an anecdote representing the stigma, I just know it's thrown around on message boards in a pejorative way. However, it's kinda like GQ ranking us as the douchiest college in America; some people take it really personally and other people take it in stride and realize, as intimated above, that worse things could happen to someone than attending the least prestigious ivy. No defense on the douchey charge though. GQ was largely dead on lol.

Which school that is the best of the best is the worst of the best of the best? Does it really matter? Ivy league is ivy league. I think the "least impressive" ivy is a pretty petty discussion.

I love ranking things! Somebody start a thread where we can rank other things!

Here is my contribution (a variation on Betharl's):

H
YP
Penn (Wharton)
Columbia
Penn (Non Wharton)
Dartmouth
Cornell Brown

I think Brown would be ahead of Cornell if not for the name. 'Brown' isn't even an impressive color.

Agreed; blue is definitely the most prestigious color, followed by red and purple, and then green in the next tier. Brown is near the bottom, only slightly better than orange (lol such a TTT color). Pink's prestige really depends on which part of the country you're in.

Okay, so:

Blue
Pink (San Francisco)
Red, Purple
Green
...
Pink (the rest of the country)
Yellow, Brown
Orange

I added yellow. I was going to add White and Black, but I don't want this getting political.
