How much influence, if any, would a soft like varsity football have on an admissions decision?

D1 sports are a pretty decent soft. Lower divisions are less impressive, although they do still show discipline/dedication/etc, as well as provide a possible conversation starter (for interviews) or a PS topic. The popularity of the sport matters: Football may possibly help more than, say, water polo, just because the adcomm is more likely to be familiar with it and/or find it impressive.
But sports as a soft aren't likely to help you outperform your numbers, unless you're an Olympic gold medalist.
<= Did an obscure D1 sport. Doesn't think it affected her cycle one way or the other.

I'd include it for sure. However, I was on Team USA for a sport, and I'm not sure that it helped me all that much. Still got plenty of waitlists. Good luck!

Was it at a major D1 program? If so, I'd venture to say it's not even a "soft" but a key component with college football being so time consuming(not to mention something interesting to set you apart, distinguish you,etc.).
On the other hand, if it was at Northwestern Southern Texas A&T State College, or something, it's about the same as being a member of debate club
