Just to update, I did call in the favor and I got in.

I just talked to a girl I went to undergrad with who is a competitive, but not a shoe-in candidate to our state's flagship school. She works for a small law firm with a named partner who is a university regent. She asked him to call the law school and try to pull some strings to get her in. She is still waitlisted. I don't think law schools like being strong armed.
