Application timing if held

Hey all,
I have a somewhat random question about the application process. So I know that the gospel on TLS is to apply as early as you can without sacrificing the quality of your application. However, I was wondering whether this logic still applies if one's application gets held at a particular school. If one were held at Harvard or Columbia, or even just deferred to the regular decision pool after applying ED, would the earliness of their application matter? It seems like that person would just been in the same boat as the regular decision people who applied at the same time the school started to re-review held applications.
Thoughts? It would be useful to have some input from someone more familiar with this than I am.
