Unsolicited Rec?

Post by lulzalicious » Fri Nov 18, 2011 10:42 pm

Can a professor send a recommendation to a LS for me if I havent asked him too (as in would they read it)?
How do I deal with it if he did?

Prof in question is a mentor/friend Ive know for 3 years pretty well, I did not want him to write me a rec for a variety of reasons (very valid). However, after he heard I was applying to two particular schools that he had attended he decided to write a letter and mail it in with my info on it.

Can I ask the school to discount it? I havent put him as a recommender for my apps...

Thanks for any help.

I've wondered about something similar: what if a crazy ex knew where you were applying and wrote a them a "kind note"?

It depends. I asked this question to some top-ranked law schools.
Some of them explicitly told me that will disregard unsolicited information.
Some others, however, didn't say so.

I had an unsolicited one sent to Stanford, they emailed him back and told him to send it to LSAC.

Why would you do that? IBTTemporaryB.

OP: Why wouldn't you want the guy's letter included? I don't see how it could hurt anything unless he's out to get you.
