Why Columbia/Chicago/NYU Essays

Has anyone written a Why Columbia? or Why Chicago? or Why NYU? supplement essay? Are they looked favorably upon or is it too obvious, like at HYS?

In the article about Why X essays on TLS, it says that for the Top 6 such essays are unnecessary.

Just to be annoyingly technical, for NYU you should sort out if you're interested in applying for one of the scholarships - then you're very much required to write an essay along those lines. The other schools at the CCN tier don't require essays for their heavy duty scholarships afaik.
