This is just too risky for me!

Post by whattheheck » Mon Sep 12, 2011 9:03 pm

After looking at several reports about the bleak economy and knowing that law school would leave me in a debt bucket of at least 160 grand once completed, I've decided to wait it out and pursue another career for the time being. I can't imagine putting myself or my family in that position without a guarantee of a job paying no less then 90 grand. Too risky for me. So I will put this down for now and come back when the odds are not so high. Good luck to you all and I will see you guys later.

What type of background do you need to go to PA school? Can a Poli sci major go?

It doesn't matter what background you have. You just need the pre reqs to apply. There are some programs that offer a B.S in P.A or your masters. It will take me a year to rack up the pre reqs but at least I know that one I finish I will have a good wage for all my efforts. And also I will be going the suny/cuny route so debt is not the issue.

One year of anatomy, chem and math are the usual requirements.

Tough to give up on that dream of being a lawyer, but I'm sure physician's assistants do a lot of the same work.

What was your undergraduate degree in and are you getting the pre-req's from a post-baccalaureate program?

I'm thankful my major comes from a field that has a 22% growth rate with a decent chance of making some good money.

If LSAT doesn't go well/schools don't offer me discounts, I have a back-up plan.

Hopefully this continues.

[P.S. All kidding aside, that's actually a pretty solid alternative]

The fact that you are so easily willing to select a career based on minimal prerequisites and expediency of getting in the entry level door pretty much summarizes why you should never go to law school.

Though, according to all the infomercials it's a rapidly expanding field with zero risk of unemployment.

Have you ever worked in healthcare? It's definitely not for everyone. I'd go shadow a PA or two before committing to a program.

Being a PA is a good gig, as long as you did some shadowing and are certain of your interests:

"Physician assistants expressed the most satisfaction with the amount of responsibility, support from coworkers, job security, working hours, supervision, and task variety... Most physician assistants were also satisfied with pay and fringe benefits."

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1381814/

Nevertheless, no profession is perfect - you may find yourself wanting more autonomy, but perhaps not.

Also, the healthcare arena is doing pretty well and, for the most part, recession proof [in comparison to the overwhelming majority of alternative sectors]. The money is good (close to 6 figures, regular working hours) for the amount of investment by the student (2-3 years).

However, like most fields, the volume of graduates getting pumped into the market is increasing annually -- so the time to make your move is now, not later.

You are aware that there are zero prerequisites for going to law school?

I never implied otherwise. That was a really high quality assessment of my comment though.

OP specifically championed the field based on the easy prereqs.
