My name is Tom Marvolo Riddle but I like to go by Lord Voldemort. Guess what, I still have to register as Tom Marvolo Riddle. I don't get why you wanting go by something has anything to do with what your name IS.
As for LSAC, you can register whenever but if you want a specific date, try when you're ready to register for the LSAT.
To be honest, I'm not even sure you are seriously asking the name question

Not sure if serious

You obviously use your legal name.

some of the same problem over the years.
Just save yourself some headache and get your legal name changed.
LSAC doesn't care what name you use as long as it matches a legal document you have to get into the LSAT.
FAFSA requires your legal name as does the loan papers. School records create problems when you are using a prefered name and your legal name is different.
