The reality is that educated people don't get their news from cable news networks and educated people have much more thoroughly informed opinions than the garbage they spit out on FOX news and MSNBC.
Nobody cares what your political standpoints are man. They only care if you're an idiot. And if you eat up the mass media garbage, whether you're conservative or liberal, they'll spot you as an idiot and *maybe* that will affect your acceptance. But even then, doubtfully.
Just get a high GPA and LSAT.

So very much this.acrossthelake wrote:LOL. You're incredibly naive if you think that one ideology is uniquely hostile of the other side. Many liberals are hostile to conservatives and many conservatives are hostile to liberals. Some liberals think conservatives are bigots while some conservatives think that liberals are morally corrupt, etc. I think both sides tend to stereotype the other and draw unfair conclusions.

There are plenty of smart/reasonable liberals and conservatives-NONE of them watch cable news.

Re: Is there an anti-conservative/GOP bias in LS admissions?
Every super conservative or liberal school likes to have their token members of the opposite political spectrum.
Look at Berkeley with Jon Yoo.
Look at UChicago with Martha Nussbaum and Bernard Harcourt.
Look at BYU-- their most recent dean is now in Obama's cabinet.
Look at NYU-- They just took Richard Epstein away from UChicago.
I think law school adcomms actually like ideological diversity in their classes. What they don't like are preachy weird people that they feel will harm the harmonious and good vibes of a pretty stressed out and fragile group of 1L students. Their bias is against pretentious, uncompromising, ideologues from both sides of the spectrum. They might view you more clearly as this if you are from the other side of the political spectrum, so maybe their is some bias against whichever group of pretentious ideologues less adcomms are members of.

Well played but you don't fool me.kdw94780 wrote:I've wondered about the same thing. I think if you were a liberal applying to a conservative school, it would not make a difference. But IMO, a lot of liberals are super hostile to conservatives. I mean we're "terrorists" or "bigots" if we disagree with any of their ideas. However, if you're friend from HLS says it can help, then why not.
OP: Your conservative position will only hurt you if you're a dick about it and the same goes with any liberal who wants to write a PS that requires a discussion of a politically charged topic. So, don't write a lengthy diatribe about how Obama is a raging foreigner socialist/fascist anti-christ and how sovereign debt is somehow a fault of liberals, and those damn liberals should probably not talk at length about Iraq War conspiracy theories and how Dick Cheney is the real anti-christ. Those are caricatures, but you get the point. Use common sense and you'll have success.
Also, unless you have something spectacular on your resume, it seems the only purpose they serve in the admissions process is to make sure you have the ability to scribble down something credible and maybe show that you've done something--especially if you're K-JD.

You're saying the resume's only purpose is this, or personal statement? And what is K-JD?mblueyahoo! wrote:

Sorry if I wasn't clear: I meant your resume. Your personal statement seems to matter a bit more because it shows your writing ability to some extent. Others might have differing opinions on the matter, but I know for sure that my resume didn't get me into Michigan.RaleighStClair wrote:You're saying the resume's only purpose is this, or personal statement? K-JD=straight from undergrad, usually no substantive work experience.

Here's the kicker: When Oral Roberts University shut down it's law school in 1986, it sent its library to what eventually became Regent University. Guess who went to Oral Roberts for Law School? Michele Bachmann.

Your political beliefs could definitely help you, so long as they're presented in a way that wouldn't alienate liberal adcoms. As a raging liberal who wants to "save the planet," conversely, I think it'll be harder for me to stand out.

Re: Is there an anti-conservative/GOP bias in LS admissions?
I don't think this is true. Schools may seek to balance ideologies, but I believe this is only a soft plus when numbers are already reached. There are also schools (Stanford) where conservative white males have a much more difficult time applying because of the relatively high number that already self-select there.hooma wrote:RaleighStClair wrote:This makes me happy.shoeshine wrote:I personally don't think there is a big bias either way.
