Do I need to once more request recommendation letters?

Post by jessimon » Sun Aug 07, 2011 3:06 pm

Hi, I have applied for some part-time law schools back to the fall of 2009. I decided not to attend any school at that time due to my work schedule and financial situation. Now I want to apply for several full-time schools for year 2011-2012 admission cycle. Can I use the old admission letters? Should I have my reference to re-submit recommendation letters (I expect the contents will be same, while only dates are different)?

No, you can use the same ones since they're still only a couple years old.

I disagree...if you applied to start in 2009 those letters could be dated 2008... Way too old. I'd have them re-signed with new dates.

Thank you for the suggestion. One thing I need to clarify is that since I applied late for the 2009-2010 cycle, the letters were signed in January 2010.

Letters of recommendation are good for five years, so no need to have them resubmitted. Furthermore, just having them redated is pointless, bordering on detrimental because your recommender's opinion would be more useful when given closer to the time you performed the work they are recommending.
