Top Law Schools

What do people say about applying to schools that seem out of their reach. Is it worth the application fee to just apply to all top twenty schools and go to the best one you get accepted to? personally, I have a 4.0 GPA and a 165 LSAT, I can't decide if i should be applying to schhols like UPENN, U of Chicago, Standford and Harvard just because, hey, maybe! Any input?

Do it! You will regret it if you don't. But, retake first.

It depends. What would you be spending the money on if you do not spend it on those applications? Do you have enough money to spare to apply to schools that you estimate you have a low likelihood of getting admitted to?

Definitely apply to Standford, and make sure you write a "Why Standford?" essay. They'll eat it up.

It could happen, but I think the top 6 schools are wasted application fees. Penn, Michigan, and UVA are the best schools you have the numbers to get into. Without an ED application even those are unlikely.

if you're going to reach for the stars, do it with a plan, not a wish. retake.

naf34, you should definitely apply to as many reaches as you want if you can stomach the application fees. I was overly conservative in which schools I applied to because I was in a situation similar to yours (mid-160s LSAT, 4.0 GPA) and even though I ended up at what I think is the best fit for me I still kick myself for not applying more broadly. You don't want to have doubts in your ultimate choice just because you still wonder "what if". Plus, I know a 165/4.0 who got Northwestern and a 166/3.9 (ED) who got Penn this year, so there's always a chance.

but you will optimize your chances at scholarship money with a retake. let's assume it takes 200 hours to get from a 167 to 171 (which I'm sure it won't take that long). that four point increase i would guess would get you at east $50K in scholarship at the same schools you would you would have been accepted to at sticker with the 167. if anyone thinks that's wrong feel free to offer an appraisal. but at that point, $50,000/200 hours is the equivalent of $250 an hour for every hour spent in honest study. what job do you have lined up that pays that much tangible monetary benefit right now? are you really that lazy to turn down a gig that pays that well?
