Hi,
I am a chem major looking to go to law school.
My professor has offered me a research position this coming fall.
Will this research opportunity help with law school admissions? Or is it unrelated??
Also, is it common for hard science majors to get into top law schools?
Thanks

Yes it helps, just make sure you have a good GPA and LSAT. Don't listen to half the crap you read on this site.

No, it really won't help. At best, it's a mediocre soft that will neither help nor hurt the OP.
But, by all means take the research position if you find it interesting. Don't do things like this just because you think it'll help with law school admissions. Do it because you want to do it.

Yeah, nobody on this website knows what the fuck is up with anything law school related.

Softs only help distinguish you from other people with similar numbers- if two applicants have a 3.5 GPA, 170 LSAT, schools are going to choose the person with the better application and softs over the person who did nothing but study in college.
In order of importance
LSAT/GPA depending on school. (1a and 1b)
Application package- PS first, resume second, diversity statements etc.
Softs/Why X statements

It's uncommon for hard science majors to have GPAs that would lead to admission at a top law school, though by no means unheard of. Besides myself, I knew 3 or 4 other hard science majors at HLS.

It's another line on your resume, but I've been told that if you get a paper out of it that's a solid soft.

Umm, at best it is a mediocre soft that will help the OP. In no way will it hurt the OP. At worst it is a mediocre soft that will neither help nor hurt the OP.

Fair enough. In all likelihood, however, it won't do much.
